Fall Retreat and David Crowder Concert

We are only two weeks away from a great weekend together up at Camp Tapawingo. We’ll be learning about speaking the language of God’s love, worshiping together, eating great camp food, challenging ourselves on the ropes course, making better friends, and growing deeper so we can go wider. Look at the brochure and sign up as soon as possible. Deadline this Sunday, Oct. 2nd.

On Tuesday night, Oct. 11th, we will experience the final tour of the David Crowder Band. It is sold out and will be standing room only at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland. It will be a late night but unforgettable. Come worship with one of the greatest songwriters of our time. Ticket, dinner, and transportation included in the price of $30. We’ll meet at the church at 4pm. Email Susan Davis if you’d like one of the remaining 10 tickets.

Pastor Joe and the rest of the Umatilla Baptist Church showed alot of emotion when we closed our weekend of service and encouragement by worshipping with them Sunday morning. We painted, polished, played and preached. We now have friends in a little corner of Oregon we’ll celebrate with in heaven because we got to participate in their kingdom cause. Saturday night was an explosion of messy games, finger rocket wars, and head bobbing contests. But, we also heard the stories of young people whose lives had been changed by the power of Jesus and His truth. It always pays off to get stretched a little and leave the comfort zone we normally hide in. There is nothing like a trip to be away, be on mission, and hear the voice of God in the midst of adventuring with Him.

Thanks for praying for us and I really pray you consider going on our next adventiure.

Overflow Youth Gathering – July 17-24

We finally have some details for you to start moving and planning with. YG ’11 is for Jr Hi, Hi School, and College. It is a week of service projects, evangelistic training, learning from national speakers, frolicking on the warm SoCal beach, concerts, and meeting North American Baptist youth from all over North America.
Location: Chapman University, Orange County, California.
Speakers: Shane Claiborne, Mark Matlock, Mark Steele, Kara Powell, Mark Yaconelli
Bands: Hawk Nelson and more
Timeline: We will hit the road early Sunday morning July 17th, take one sleeping stop on the way, and be in OC the afternoon of July 18th. We will spend our mornings in outreach projects, our afternoons in activities, and main meeting. We will head home Saturday July 23rd after lunch, take one sleeping stop, and be back at Salt Creek Sunday night, July 24th.
Registration: Your cost will be $100 (after the fundraisers, actual cost is $359). You must deposit $50 to get your spot (only 13 spots available). Get a form from the forms page, print, fill it out and hand it to Russ with your deposit.
Deadline: Sunday, April 10th (save $10 by signing up by March 20th, $40 deposit)

How did the year turn out?

2010 Youth Ministry Report
Are you ready for a fast pace rambling of every event we did, series we taught and ministry we performed last year? I’ve decided not to do that (a list of events is on the following page). Rather, I would like to talk about how the areas of the ministry are doing and how I saw God at work. Although rolling off a list sure is easier.
The Junior High Group went through a huge transformation this year. With a big class of 7th graders coming in from King’s Kids, our group doubled in size on Wednesday nights. There are quite a few un-churched students who are brand-new to the faith and just beginning to see how the basics of Christianity change everything about life. We always have a roar of a time playing and singing at Breakout (wed. night meetings). The coliseum facility has been greatly improved by the hard work of our teens and the Springdale youth group who came down last August. It is bright and white and we’ve updated the audio visual equipment too. A few of the junior highers have shown their musical talents, improved, and used them for the benefit of the church. I hope you saw them Christmas eve! Many of these students are faithfully supporting their campus ministry and reaching out to their friends with the good news.
The High School group is full of some really neat, athletic, and growing people who, on Sunday mornings, have developed into a healthy class that discusses and interacts with the things of God. Sunday night meetings have been fairly smaller and we’ve struggled to keep a good number coming out to go deeper in the walk with God. I am encouraged by some real maturity going on but our high schoolers are very busy and involved in all kinds of things that make it very tough to get them all together for almost anything. I can see them staying true even though the world pulls at them in many directions.
On campus, many of our students are participating in the broader kingdom of God by supporting and participating in the various ministries at school. At Perrydale this year, the students have stepped up to take more responsibility for the meetings, planning crowd-breakers and messages, leading in prayer. Right now, Pastor Russ is facilitating the club but there aren’t many Salt Creek students that participate. The school is very appreciative with the ways in which our church has reached out to them. At Dallas High, this year, we began having students share their stories with the hundreds of peers who come to the free Soulfood lunches. At La Creole this year, Salt Creek youth have been a huge core group to the ministry making up over half of the participants!
The college group has reached a unique place. After a few years of faithful and energetic involvement in our discussions, worship, and potluck, many of these young people are facing key decisions in direction for career, school change, and relationship building. Let’s all pray for God’s guidance
…for these wonderful young adults.
I am very blessed to work with the volunteer youth leaders that I do. They all are/or are becoming veterans of the art of ministering to teens. They grow in their devotion to the kids on a regular basis. They take initiative to build and add their own flair to our ministry together through planning game nights, car mechanic training, decorating the youth room, pouring in the time, and making so many of our activities successful. Thank you, Lord, for their partnership. They are: Tony Sutton, Scott Zentz, Phil Osborn, Rebekah Buhler, Sara Jurgensen, Rebekah Burke, Aaron Osborn, Will Hughes, and, my favorite, Kristen Richmond. Many others contribute, thank you, too. Especially Mabel Villwock who has helped me tame some of my office/admin duties.
Thank you for your prayers. Keep lifting up our kids for only God can cause the growth for which we are looking. I’ve seen His mercy this year in turning some key students back to His side who were wandering.
